Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: Block Blast
As you walk down the hallways of MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA), you’ll likely come across a student engrossed in Block Blast during their break time. Their phone screens glow with vibrant hues of different colors flashing before their eyes as they cautiously place blocks of various shapes and sizes on top of one another. Occasional sighs and groans fill the air as someone misclicks and ruins a perfect combo. The chime of a pink heart combo or a blue diamond combo rings as scores climb higher. From students saying, “I’m so bored! I’ll just play Block Blast,” to excited shouts of “Yay! I finally beat my high score,” it’s no surprise that Block Blast is everywhere. It’s the source of competitiveness, hallway obsession, and classroom mania. That leaves us wondering … what is the hype all about?
A major contributor to Block Blast’s popularity is its eye-catching visuals and colorful design. The game is a feast for the eyes, with the blocks appearing in several colors: red, blue, green, and purple—you name it! However, Block Blast isn’t all just about looks. The real challenge comes from its gameplay. Unlike Tetris, which has more rigid controls and a steeper learning curve, Block Blast is more straightforward and intuitive, making it more suitable for casual gameplay. Moreover, contrary to other games where time is of the essence, Block Blast imposes no such constraints, ensuring that players can place their blocks freely. With that in mind, Grade 8 student Mikaela Mancilla shares, “Block Blast gets addicting because it’s a simple game wherein you can keep trying to get a high score, and before you know it, you’re playing again and again.” The mix of simple mechanics and strategy makes Block Blast engaging; it’s a game that’s easy to learn but hard to master.
Additionally, the game is easily accessible to everyone. Students can play this offline game 24/7, anytime and anywhere! It’s a perfect way to pass the time, relax, and unwind from all the school stress while battling in friendly competitions to see who can achieve the highest scores. As Grade 10 student Rianne Denise Sy mentions, “Block Blast entertains me and helps me relax after a long and tiring day at school.”
Block Blast is more than just a simple game. It is a shared experience that brings students together, whether for a quick break between classes or a healthy competition to beat high scores. With its growing popularity, it’s clear Block Blast isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
