From Olympian to Mentor: The Journey of Coach Jenny Guerrero

The MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) swimming team continues to grow under the guidance of its new coach, whose background includes competing on the world’s biggest stage. Leading the team is Coach Jenny Rose Guerrero, a former Olympian and national athlete, who has represented the Philippines as early as 14 years old.

Guerrero’s journey in swimming began at the age of nine, when she first took up the sport as a summer hobby with her siblings and cousins. What started as a simple activity soon grew into something more. At an age when most teenagers were still discovering their interests, Guerrero found herself representing the Philippines on the world stage. In 2000, she became the youngest member of the Philippine delegation at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Building on her Olympic experience, Guerrero continued to make her mark in international competitions, bringing home silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m breaststroke at the 2001 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur. She also competed in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, where she finished eighth in the 200m breaststroke, further establishing herself as one of the region’s top swimmers.

As a young student-athlete, Guerrero struggled to balance academics and sports. “I attended school in Alabang, but I had to travel all the way to the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila for my training sessions,” she shared. Long hours on the road and in the pool taught her discipline, perseverance, and the importance of staying committed despite the demands of daily life.

After retiring from competitive swimming in 2005, Guerrero found a new purpose in coaching young athletes. “At first, I didn’t have the heart for it,” she admitted. “But I’ve learned to grow and be passionate in what I’m doing.” Over time, coaching became a way for her to give back to the sport that shaped her.

“I want young athletes to grow not just stronger physically but with values—most importantly respect, discipline, faith in the Lord, and obedience,” she explained. Her coaching philosophy reflects her belief in developing not only skilled swimmers, but also individuals grounded in character and faith.

Looking ahead, Guerrero envisions more than just competitive success for the MGCNLCA swim team. “My long-term goal is to build a team where everyone is united and everyone has each other’s back,” she shared. For her, success is not only measured by performance, but by the strength of the team and the values they carry.

For students striving to balance academics, sports, and faith, Guerrero offers a simple reminder: “Don’t overwhelm yourself—just take it one day at a time.” Her words reflect the same principles that have guided her journey from a young national athlete to a dedicated coach shaping the lives of student-athletes.

With her experience, passion, and leadership, Coach Guerrero continues to inspire the MGCNLCA community, not only through her achievements but through her commitment to shaping disciplined, faithful, and resilient swimmers.
