Driven With Purpose: MGCNLCA Golf Varsity Set to Debut

Stepping onto the green, MGC New Life Christian Academy’s (MGCNLCA) golf varsity team has started its debut at the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) Inter-School 2025, which runs from September 27, 2025 to February 2026. This marks a historic first for the school as it fields its newly launched golf varsity.

The New Lifers are no strangers to the tournament, having previously competed from September 14, 2024 to February 16, 2025 despite not having been an official varsity at the time. This school year, MGCNLCA formally launched the golf varsity, signaling the start of a new chapter for the school’s athletics as the eighth sports varsity team.

Leading the newly formed team are Coach Sammy Sy, who will serve as head coach, and Coach Buddy De Joya as assistant coach. Tryouts were held at Villamoran Golf Academy on July 14 and 15. After careful evaluation by the coaches, 20 students were accepted into the team: 10 to represent the senior high category, five for the junior high category, and five for the middle school category.

More than wins and tournaments, the MGCNLCA golf varsity carries a deeper mission: to honor God through excellence, effort, and unity.

“Of course, we want to win! More than winning, though, golf is character building, and I want to help build strong, self-confident, cool-under-pressure players who personify [MGCNLCA’s] values,” said Coach Sammy.
