SHS Students Gain Hands-On Learning in Field Trips

Learning extended beyond the classroom for Senior High School (SHS) students of MGC New Life Christian Academy as they took part in a series of educational trips this January, exploring real-world settings in media and science to deepen their understanding of classroom lessons.

As part of their Media and Information Literacy (MIL) subject last semester, Zion students visited the ABS-CBN newsroom to learn about broadcast journalism and media production on January 21 and 28. Divided into two groups, the graduating students toured the newsroom and TV studios. They also engaged in a lively panel discussion with weatherman Ariel Rojas, reporters Andrea Taguines and Ganiel Krishnan, and other ABS-CBN news production staff.  The highlight of the tour was their live TV guest appearance on TV Patrol Express.

Zion A student Ella Steffi Chan shared, “Visiting ABS-CBN helped me see how the media industry functions, from planning to production. It made me appreciate how much effort goes into producing news.”

MIL Teacher Richelle Kho said the ABS-CBN newsroom tour was meant to deepen students’ understanding of journalism beyond the classroom. “I hope that the students can observe how things are done in the newsroom and in the studios,” she expressed. “The experience will hopefully expose [them] to the process of broadcast journalism, and the challenges involved in keeping the profession viable and relevant in this fast-changing world of media.”

Following their ABS-CBN tour, the Zion B students then went to Enchanted Kingdom on January 28 for their General Physics 2 course. “Riding the attractions really showed how concepts like motion and force work in real life,” Zion B student Cate Gian Chua reflected. “It was a fun way to learn, and I also got to spend time with my friends outside the classroom.”

Meanwhile, Olive students explored Masungi Georeserve last January 30 in connection with their Earth and Life Science subject from the previous semester. The students embarked on the Discovery Trail, where they learned about the different rocks and plant species in the georeserve. Part of the experience on the trail were the numerous opportunities for rope climbing.

Olive C student Roberto Fulgencio III noted, “[The tour] really helped me appreciate nature in a new way, even though navigating it was challenging.”

STEM Strand Coordinator Katherine Avante stressed that the field trips were organized to reinforce classroom lessons through practical, hands-on experiences. “These trips transformed theory into experience,” she said. “Enchanted Kingdom made physics tangible through motion and energy, while Masungi Georeserve grounded Earth and Life Science in biodiversity, geology, and conservation.”

According to SHS Supervisor Raquiel Pinlac, the trips also fostered engagement and understanding of academic subjects while providing opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom. “These experiences facilitate learning by allowing students to connect theory with practice,” she remarked. “Ultimately, [they] make learning more relevant and meaningful, equipping our students with competencies essential for college readiness and future career pathways.”

Hi! I’m a senior from Batch 22 -- a volleyball enthusiast, certified foodie, and a big fan of good laughs with friends and family. When I’m not on the court training for our next game, I’m probably out on the hunt for my next hotpot and froyo fix.
