Creating Christ-Centered Leaders: MGCNLCA Student Leadership Conference 2026

Despite the inclement weather, MGC New Life Christian Academy pushed through with its annual student leadership conference last September 5 at the school auditorium, after it was postponed from its original schedule of August 15.

Guided by the theme “Building Foundations for Christ-Centered Leadership and Service,” student leaders from varsities and organizations, as well as class officers, gathered to deepen their understanding of the foundations of what it means to be a leader.

School Director Helen Villanueva opened the day by highlighting that true leadership is grounded in purpose, service, and character. “Leadership is about having a heart to serve others who makes their lives greater,” shared Villanueva.

Afterwards, Senior Pastor of Grace Christian Church of the Philippines, Reverend Dr. Stephen Tan, led the two morning sessions. He discussed how understanding one’s identity in Christ is the foundation for leadership, sharing biblical principles that Christlike leaders must prioritize. Rev. Dr. Tan concluded by reminding the students about the purpose of serving, stating, “We realize the worth of serving God because of its eternal value.”

Following this, the students participated in multiple team-building activities. In the first one, each group of students were tasked to build the tallest tower using only paper and tape, with secret roles assigned to each student. Through this activity, the participants learned that whether their roles were seen or unseen, each was important in achieving their team's goal. 

For the second activity, participants were divided into ten groups, each assigned a different scenario regarding the top ten struggles of student leaders, according to a survey completed by the attendees. Following this, each group presented solutions for their respective scenarios, connecting the situations to biblical principles.

The afternoon session then continued with School Principal Evangeline Co explaining the areas student leaders must develop, particularly character, responsibility, and Christ-centered role. “Your position, popularity, and talent aren’t your foundation; Christ is,” Co stated. 

The conference concluded with an inspirational talk by Batch 10 alumnus John Faith Matthew Gacutan who reiterated a leader's established purpose of serving others with Christlike character. “We serve because it is a part of our calling,” remarked Gacutan, emphasizing that true leadership is defined not by one’s position, but by responsibility and service that create an impact on others.

“Before we pick up our badge, we must first learn to pick up our towel,” said Grade 11 student and Student Government President Jason Bryan Gacias, referencing how Jesus Christ washed His own disciples' feet. “The student leadership conference truly reminded me that Christ-like leadership begins with character before influence.”
